Location Guide for Edmonton Wedding Photographs

In Tips for Edmonton Brides & Grooms

One of the questions I am asked quite often is, “Where should we go for our wedding pictures?”   To help with planning your wedding photography, here are a few suggested photo locations from Edmonton and area, including both indoor and outdoor spots for great pictures.   Of course this is by no means an exhaustive list, but it is a great place to start!

  • Fairmont Hotel MacDonald

The Hotel Macdonald, one of the oldest hotels in Edmonton, is as rich in history as it is in photographic opportunities. Beautiful grounds overlook the river valley, and the magnificent architecture and classy interior make this hotel a great place for photos, provided you are having your wedding and/or reception there.

  • Muttart Conservatory

There are three pyramids featuring arid, tropical and temperate climate zones and one show pyramid that changes frequently to suit the seasons. Not generally suitable for large groups but can accommodate smaller ones. This is a popular location year round so call early to avoid disappointment.

  • University of Alberta – Rutherford House

Contact: (780) 422-2697

  • Located on the University campus, Rutherford House makes a great indoor and outdoor location for photos. Indoors space is limited however, so don’t plan on having large groups inside. Call for rates and availability.

  • University of Alberta – Timms Centre

Natural light, exceptional architecture, lush greenery, and a magnificent curved staircase provide the ideal setting for wedding and portrait photography.

  • University of Alberta – Arts Building/Convocation Hall

The Arts Building has wonderful stone architecture, with creeping vines and mature tress plus a wide set of stairs suitable for small and large groups. Inside you’ll find beautiful stonework with soft window light and plenty of space for your photos. Can be booked for indoor or outdoor photos as well as ceremonies can be held inside in Convocation Hall.

  • Edmonton City Hall

City Hall is a wonderful piece of modern architecture in the centre of downtown. It features large staircases, various pillars and railings, and a simple color scheme. Contact the Civic Events office for rates and restrictions on use.

One of the most popular wedding locations in Edmonton, the museum and Government House offer many different backgrounds for photography, ranging from classic architecture to mature trees. There is no need to book in advance, unless you would like to have your ceremony on the grounds or have your banquet inside the museum. Call the museum for details.

  • Alberta Legislature

The Alberta Legislature Building and grounds boast a large park setting with an abundance of large, mature trees, flower beds, a fountain and reflecting pool, as well as magnificent architecture. Photographs are permitted outdoors only and do not require a reservation or payment.

  • Devonian Botanic Garden

Lush gardens and acres of space offer plenty of locations to choose from. The Japanese Garden is the most popular location in the gardens featuring a serene waterfall, bridges, gazebos, a pond and much more. It is located about a half-hour drive from Edmonton’s west-end but is worth the drive!

  • The Telus Plaze Parkade – Jasper Ave

I used this location a few times now for wedding photography. Not a location everybody thinks of for wedding photography, but this location totally fits the urban style of photography. Check out this unique images and decide for yourself.

  • Red Willow Park – St. Albert

St. Albert Place Promenade

A beautiful trail system winds along the Sturgeon River, offering many possibilities for outdoor photos. Some notable features include a large wooden train trestle, St. Albert Place (city hall) and various other bridges and parks along the trails.

Step into the past at Fort Edmonton Park! Turn of the century buildings, horse-drawn carriages, and a steam train are just a few of the highlights. It is a wonderful place for wedding photos and can add to the uniqueness of a themed wedding. Fort Edmonton can also accommodate the rest of your day, with facilities for ceremonies and banquets. Check out this piece of history in the river valley!

  • McKay School

10425 – 99 Avenue

Contact: Edmonton Public Schools – (780) 422-1970

Edmonton’s oldest brick schoolhouse. A former public school (1906), hidden downtown Edmonton, now hosts the Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum. The brick building is still in its original state for most part and offers many historic backdrops, which is ideal for weddings.

  • Commerce Place and Manulife Place – Jasper Ave

The words classy and creative come to mind. The two places are connected and offer unique photo opportunities. The natural light is fabulous. The flooring is stunning. The perfect place for a session with an urban touch. Over the past few years I have done a lot of wedding photography at these stylish downtown Edmonton locations.

  • Union Bank Hotel – Jasper Ave

A classic! The opportunity for indoors formal wedding photography is limited but the hotel offers a ideal environment for a smaller wedding. Outdoors, the brick facade offers lots of photo opportunities with an “old downtown Edmonton” background.

  • The back of the Old Strathcona Farmers Market

Located just north of Whyte Ave., brick walls, huge green warehouse doors, cool graffiti, and old train tracks – it’s all there! Take a look at these engagement photos.

  • Gold Bar and Capilano Park

Situated at the border of Edmonton and Sherwood Park there are two great locations, only 3 minutes apart, that are perfect for fall photography. I often combine the colorful fall woods of Gold Bar with the river valley at Capilano Park. It’s a very relaxing environment. Kids can be themselves and I can capture the moments that are so typical and unique for the family. Ideal for fall family photography.

  • Broadmoor Golf Course (free)

Any golf course would work actually; they offer a beautiful green location for wedding and family photography. Are you an avid golf player or is someone in your family? Consider a golf course for your family or wedding photography. It adds a personal touch.

  • Woodbridge Park

A beautiful addition to your wedding photography at Festival Place. The two locations are only minutes apart. The little bridge over the lake is a popular location for wedding and family photography. It also offers a great green park with mature trees in the back.

  • Louise Mckinney park

Located just beside Saskatchewan river, this park has plenty of trees, flowers, bridge, stsirs, walkway, bench to take some fabulous wedding pictures.

  • Citadel Theatre

Contact: Administration at (780) 426-4811

The Citadel theatre has a large indoor garden featuring an upstairs lake and a waterfall wall. An atrium upstairs may be rented for indoor ceremonies. Daytime sessions are best as most of the interior light comes from their large window

  • Festival Place

For an all-in-one location Festival Place (in Sherwood Park) is a wonderful choice. Located on beautiful grounds with pathways, bridges, and a fountain, there are many nice portrait spots.   In addition, their main theatre makes a beautiful and unique place to hold your ceremony (worth a look!) and their banquet hall – or their stage! – hosts a wonderful reception.

  • John Janzen Nature Center

Located right next to Fort Edmonton Park, the Nature Center offers a varied natural parkland for beautiful photo opportunities. A bridge leading over a small pond leads into a system of nature trails which are great places to spend some time exploring – and taking pictures!

  • Neil Crawford Center

The Neil Crawford Centre on 113th Street has two buildings available for photography – The Alberta Infrastructure Building and the J.G. O’Donoghue Building. Both offer well landscaped indoor gardens of good depth and variety.

  • Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village

Contact: (780) 662-3640 or email uchv@gov.ab.ca

Very few locations in the Edmonton area bring out the sense of history and beauty that you will find at the Ukranian Village. Just 20 minutes from Edmonton city limits, the trip is very reasonable and the results are worth it. Beautiful historic churches to host your wedding ceremony, unique photo opportunities and a rich historical character to the park all make for an enjoyable visit.

  • West Edmonton Mall

For a little something different, our city’s best-known landmark provides some unique photographic portrait or wedding locations. The Santa Maria ship may be booked for your wedding or portrait session as well. Other corners of the Mall, such as Europa Boulevard and Bourbon Street can also create unique images! While we’re there, let’s go on a carousel ride at Galaxy Land and create some truly memorable photographs.

  • Hawrelak Park

Although Hawrelak Park is extremely busy during the summer, a few choice locations are always available for your wedding or portrait requirements. One of these locations is the bridge that crosses the North Saskatchewan River. Besides photography on the bridge, there are a few nice trails on either side for that “forest” look.
